The current policy in Waipā is working and should be rolled over for another three years.

In the Waipā District:

  • Community and sporting organisations received $1,291,378 in grants from 8 gaming societies in the 2021 calendar year.

  • In 2020/2021, a total of 11 problem gambling clients were seen by services — from all forms of gambling, not just gaming machines in clubs and pubs.

  • There are 15 gaming machine venues in the Waipā District, three of which are clubs. These clubs use gaming machine profits to directly benefit their members, such as paying for repairs and maintenance.

  • None of Waipā’s gaming machine venues are located in a very high deprivation area.

Safer Gaming NZ, and the Gaming Machine Association of New Zealand, want to see problem gambling in Aotearoa reduced to zero. Thankfully, the rate of problem gambling here has not seen any real increase since the 1990s.

Reducing the number of gaming machines in clubs and pubs in Waipā would reduce the amount of grant funding available.

Plus, reducing the number of gaming machines is likely to drive some players into riskier, less-regulated forms of gambling such as online gambling. Online gambling is always available, incredibly addictive, and returns no community benefit.
