Gambling in New Zealand: Report
An overview of ‘National Wellbeing Analysis’: a report which studies the real impact of gambling on our society, including the wide-ranging benefits to communities.
Grant recipient survey 2022
We must balance harm reduction and community benefit.
Every year, 11,000 groups and services benefit from $300m of Class 4 funding. This includes emergency services, disability support groups, sports clubs, and much, much more.
In 2022, Safer Gaming NZ surveyed nearly 800 representatives of community grant recipients, asking them if they believe they could replace C4 funding.
The survey results showed that:
Over 92 per cent of responders feel it is either impossible or
very unlikely that Class 4 funding could be replaced by
Government funding, i.e. subsidies or grants.
Over 89 per cent of responders feel it is either impossible or
very unlikely that Class 4 funding could be replaced by funding
directly from community members.
Player survey 2022
Gaming machine players have a voice, too.
In 2022, we surveyed over four hundred electronic gaming machine players. It was important we understood whether proposed new rules/changes would reduce enjoyment enough to drive people towards online gambling.
For more than 75 per cent of players, the proposed changes would increase their likelihood of gambling online.
